small town, usa

for some reason, since i've come back to the usa, i am just in love with downtowns. in fact, 3 out of my last 4 weekends have comprised of piddling around in downtowns. i have visited waxhaw, hilsborough and most recently, waynesville. plus, i live in downtown burlington, which is unfortunately no where near as cool as any other downtown, though it has a few small town charms. but i just love walking through farmer's markets and bookstores and art galleries and chocolate shops and talking to the nicest people you'll ever meet who make honey in their backyard and just happen to be from argentina.

i think i am falling in love with the usa again. in particular, i love the south. sometimes when i was in argentina, i just felt like america was so void of culture or that it was just borrowing its culture from everywhere else. but, at least in the south, that's not entirely true. there is cheerwine in glass bottles. every city has its own baseball team and that team never wins. there are granny's chicken palaces that serve family style rice and gravy, green beans, golden nuggets PLUS your meal. there are hydrangeas. there are porch swings. there are VBS signs on every corner because there is a church on every corner. there is sweet tea. there are outdoor theaters. there are seer sucker suits.

i still miss argentina. i still don't know exactly where i fit in. but i am excited for culture and for the promise of what's to come.

this post made me smile. the thought of living in the usa again is terribly exciting but terribly scary all at the same time... but i feel hopeful after reading it, that maybe a year from now i may write one similar to it, focusing on the simple things i have fallen in love with.
